ENTREPRENEUR: Linn Bäckegren

COMPANY: Nemetic

INCUBATOR: Chalmers Ventures

Business idea:

Developing a surgical tool that will reduce the time it takes to close the wound after open abdominal surgeries.

– Receiving this scholarship is a real motivational boost. It is fun that ÅForsk believes in young entrepreneurs, it also confirms that what we are doing is valuable not only for us, but for others as well, says Linn Bäckegren, the entrepreneur behind Nemetic.

4000 surgeries of time saved

Nemetic is developing a surgical tool that will reduce the time it takes to close the wound after open abdominal surgeries.

– Today, closing the wound can take up to 45 minutes and we aim to reduce that to about 10 minutes, saving up time corresponding to 4000 surgeries per year in Sweden, Linn Bäckegren explains.

The idea came from a surgeon that felt closing the wound after an open abdominal surgery was a tiring and tedious task.

– So, he teamed up with a friend of his and they together drafted the first version of the invention. After a while they contacted Chalmers Ventures and that is where my team and I came into the picture. We have continued the work with the idea and are on our way to turning it into reality.

Good enough can be a challenge

– As an entrepreneur I am very detailed oriented, and I have a strong sense of responsibility, which I would say are some my good qualities. I also have a need to understand everything, which both in a way is good and bad.

Linn Bäckegren has a bachelor in bioengineering and is currently doing her final year of a master’s program in Entrepreneurship and Business design at Chalmers when she’s not busy developing Nemetic.

– Keeping a balance between college and friends, between working and resting, and understanding when things are good enough can be a challenge. A lot of the things we are doing can be improved indefinitely, but there are only 24 hours in a day and time management has been a hard.

Nemetic is a project under Chalmers Ventures, and have been for about a year.

– It has had a really big impact, we have gotten a lot of help and support from both Chalmers Ventures in general and our business coach in particular. We also have an ongoing collaboration with some great students from industrial design engineering at Chalmers who are developing our first prototype.
