Registering a trade mark is an important process to protect your company’s identity and
distinguish its products or services from those of its competitors. Below are five tips based on our partner, the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) – to help you through the process:

1. Understand the importance of trade mark protection
A registered trade mark gives you the exclusive right to use it for the goods and services you
specify. This protection is valid for 10 years and can be renewed an unlimited number of times.

2. Choose the right goods and services
When you apply for a trade mark registration, you must specify the goods and/or services your
trade mark will cover. There are 45 different classes to choose from. Make sure you only
classes that are relevant to your business, as each additional class will incur an
additional fee.

3. Make sure your trade mark is unique
Before applying, you should check that your trade mark is not similar to or confusing with
already registered trade marks. Use the PRV trade mark database to search for
existing trade marks and avoid potential conflicts.

4. Prepare your application carefully
Before submitting your application, it is important to prepare it carefully. The PRV offers a
checklist that can help you ensure that you have all the necessary information and
documentation in place.

5. Get help from PRV customer support
Not sure how to proceed? PRV customer support is knowledgeable and accessible – don’t hesitate
contact them if you have any questions about the application, classes or how protection works.
Following these steps will increase your chances of a successful trade mark registration
and strong protection for your company’s trade mark.
